I Want to Get Stronger. Where Do I Start?

Why strength training is one of the best investments you can make after 40.

"I want to get stronger."

"I need to get back in shape."

"I want to tone up."

"I don't want to feel so weak anymore."

If you've ever said one of those things, you're not alone.

In fact, I hear those words almost every week from women who walk through the doors at MissFits.

Very few women come in saying, "I want to build muscle."

What they really want is to feel better.

They want more energy.

They want to keep up with their kids and grandkids.

They want to stop getting winded on the stairs.

They want to feel confident in their clothes again.

They want to enjoy life without feeling like their body is holding them back.

And while every woman's story is different, my answer is surprisingly similar:

Getting stronger is one of the best investments you can make in your future.

Not because we're trying to create bodybuilders.

Not because we're chasing bigger muscles.

But because strength gives you the freedom to live the life you want to live.

Think of strength training like brushing your teeth.

You probably don't wake up every morning excited to brush your teeth. You do it because it's essential. It's simply part of taking care of yourself.

I believe strength training belongs in that same category.

Beginning around age 30, women naturally start to lose muscle if they aren't doing anything to maintain it. Over time, that muscle loss can affect everything from your metabolism and posture to your balance, confidence, and ability to do everyday activities with ease.

The good news?

It's never too late to get stronger.

Whether you're 42 or 72, whether you've exercised your whole life or you're starting over after years away, your body can become stronger. And becoming stronger doesn't just change your body - it changes your quality of life.

If What Used to Work Isn't Working Anymore...

If you've ever thought, "I'm doing everything I used to do, but it just isn't working anymore," you're not imagining it.

Our bodies change, and our approach to fitness needs to change with them.

In our 20s and 30s, many of us could get away with doing a little extra cardio, skipping strength training, or being inconsistent with exercise. After 40, those strategies simply aren't as effective.

Our metabolism naturally slows. Hormones begin to shift. Recovery can take longer. We may notice more stiffness, less flexibility, lower energy, and that our balance isn't quite what it used to be.

Life changes, too.

Many women are juggling careers, caring for children or aging parents, spending long hours sitting at a desk, and trying to squeeze their own health into whatever time is left.

That's why I encourage women to look at their health holistically.

Strength, nutrition, sleep, stress, hormones, and movement all work together.

There's no magic exercise or quick fix. Long-term health comes from consistently taking care of your body in a way that fits your life.

What Getting Stronger Really Means

When women first come to MissFits, they almost never tell me,

"I want to build muscle."

Here's what they do say:

"I want to get stronger."

"I want to tone up."

"I need to get back in shape."

"I want to feel better."

"I want to get rid of these bat wings."

"I need to strengthen my core."

"I don't want to get winded just going up the stairs."

Sound familiar?

If so, you're exactly the kind of woman we love helping.

What many women don't realize is that the solution to all of those goals starts in the same place: building strength.

Strength isn't about looking like a bodybuilder.

It's about living a stronger life.

When I think about getting stronger, I don't think about the gym.

I think about carrying every grocery bag into the house in one trip.

I think about climbing stairs without getting winded.

I think about getting down on the floor to play with your grandkids - and getting back up with ease.

I think about hiking a 14er with your family.

I think about standing taller because your posture has improved.

I think about preventing injuries before they happen.

I think about feeling confident in your body again.

Those are the things that matter.

Yes, strength training also supports a healthy metabolism because muscle burns more energy than fat, even while you're at rest. But that's only one benefit.

Building strength also helps improve your balance, supports healthy posture, protects your joints, and helps you stay active and independent as you age.

That's what strength training is really about.

The Biggest Fear I Hear

When women first come to MissFits, they're usually not worried about working hard.

They're worried about working wrong.

Many have never strength trained before.

Some worry they'll get hurt.

Others feel intimidated because they don't know the proper technique.

They're afraid they'll look foolish.

They're afraid they'll do something incorrectly.

The good news?

You don't have to know what you're doing before you start.

That's my job.

One member told me that before joining MissFits, she would never have walked into a gym or fitness class by herself because she felt like everyone else knew what they were doing.

Several years later she told me,

"Now I feel like I could walk into any gym or fitness class anywhere and know exactly what I'm doing."

That wasn't just physical progress.

That was confidence.

And confidence doesn't stay inside the gym.

It carries into every part of your life.

Strength First. Cardio Too.

Sometimes people assume that if I'm encouraging strength training, I must be against cardio.

Not at all.

Cardio is wonderful for your heart, your endurance, and your overall health.

I encourage women to walk.

I celebrate hiking.

I love anything that gets women moving.

But if all you're doing is cardio, you're only training part of the equation.

Cardio helps keep your heart healthy.

Strength training helps keep you strong enough to enjoy the life you're working so hard to build.

The goal isn't to choose one over the other.

The goal is to build a body that's healthy, resilient, and capable for years to come.

Getting Started Doesn't Have to Be Intimidating

One of the biggest misconceptions about strength training is that you have to know what you're doing before you begin.

You don't.

At MissFits, we meet every woman where she is.

Whether you've exercised your whole life or you're starting over after an injury, a busy season of life, or simply years of putting everyone else first, we begin by getting to know you.

Your goals.

Your health history.

Your concerns.

Your previous experience.

What's worked before.

And what's getting in your way now.

From there, we create a plan that fits your body, your schedule, and your goals.

There's no pressure to keep up with anyone else.

No expectation that you'll already know everything.

Just coaching, encouragement, accountability, and steady progress.

It's About So Much More Than Getting Stronger

When women first come to MissFits, they usually have a specific goal.

Maybe they want to lose weight.

Maybe they want to tone up.

Maybe they simply want to feel better.

Those are wonderful goals, and we're excited to help them achieve them.

But over the years, something even more meaningful happens.

They discover they can do things they never imagined.

They carry every grocery bag into the house without thinking twice.

They hike with their kids.

They get down on the floor to play with their grandkids - and get back up with ease.

They stand taller.

They move with confidence.

They stop worrying about what their bodies can't do and start celebrating everything they can do.

Many of them also discover something they weren't expecting.

They make lifelong friendships.

They find a community that encourages them, celebrates them, and walks alongside them.

They come for the coaching.

They stay for the community.

To me, that's what getting stronger is really about.

It's not about lifting heavier weights.

It's about living a bigger life.

If there's one thing I hope you take away from this article, it's this:

Getting stronger isn't about adding more years to your life. It's about adding more life to your years.

And the best time to start is today.
